President of APAA ALONZO Q. ANCHETAIt is a great honor to be elected to serve as the 9th president of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association.  Thanks to the efforts of my predecessors and all the members of the APAA, our association has grown and now comprises 17 recognized groups.  Each of these groups has made great efforts to develop the intellectual property field in our region, and I see my role as president to break down barriers, open access, and facilitate communication among our groups and members.

I believe that one of the important missions of our association is to provide opportunities for IP practitioners to exchange information openly, so that every member who chooses can play a part in improving the IP infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region.  My desire is to make it easier for the efforts of each group to be recognized and shared by other groups, so that all can cooperate to achieve common goals that no one group could achieve by itself.  For example, among the specific issues we should together address are:

  1. In our region, China is rapidly improving its IP infrastructure and growing to become an IP superpower.
  2. The developed countries in other regions increasingly look to our region as a market for services, finished goods, and resources.
  3. The technical innovation gap among areas in our region is widening.

In recognition of that reality, I believe that our association can best serve its members and our region as a whole by actively cooperating with WIPO, by convincing our peers and decision-makers in China that the APAA is ready to welcome them and that joining the APAA would be in their interest as well as ours, and by using every opportunity to transmit our APAA voice to the world at large.  Every member of the APAA can contribute to at least one of those efforts, and to make it easier for those efforts to be channeled, I will work with all members to:

  1. Increase the transparency of APAA decision-making and operations; and
  2. Build systems for growing future world leaders in the IP field.

I pledge to serve you all, but only together can we achieve these goals.
